Mission, Vision and Goals

The University Honors Program (UHP) MISSION is to guide and challenge students from across the University as they develop into broad, creative, independent, and informed thinkers.

The UHP VISION is that graduates of the University Honors Program will contribute to their disciplines, their communities, and the broader world through the application of their skills, knowledge, and creativity.

The GOALS of the University Honors Program are:

  • To provide an enriched and intellectually exciting Honors curriculum that will broaden the horizons of highly motivated students and deepen their understanding of the intellectual traditions and methodologies of their chosen fields.
  • To promote an understanding of the processes through which new ideas and insights are generated in all fields of creative endeavor by encouraging early involvement in a broad spectrum of research, scholarship and artistic expression, under the guidance of world-renowned University of Minnesota faculty.
  • To offer continuing one-on-one contact with UHP’s professional advisors and dedicated faculty, so as to help academically talented students chart their own course throughout their University career, and to prepare for graduate school, as well as post-graduate professional programs and career opportunities.
  • To encourage students to gain both global and local perspectives by promoting opportunities for study abroad as well as leadership and service in our community.
  • To provide UHP scholars with a stimulating and supportive community of like-minded peers in diverse fields and from diverse backgrounds, making life long contacts in the process.
  • To encourage the University’s outstanding undergraduates to compete for national and international scholarships, and to provide guidance throughout the application process.
  • To recognize student achievements, especially in research, scholarship, and artistic expression by awarding Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude) at graduation.
