Major Requirements for Students Pursuing Latin Honors

Common Honors Courses in Major

Many honors students choose to fulfill honors course requirements through their liberal education requirements or taking graduate level courses

Required Thesis Course

ArtH 3971V

Capstone Considerations

All students, including Honors students, complete a capstone paper, usually based on work taken in a 5xxx-level course. Students wishing to expand their capstone paper into an Honors thesis must speak with the instructor of ArtH 3971V by the end of the second week of class about the additional and/or enriched work necessary to rise to the level of an Honors thesis. Examples of such work include: addressing each of the required criteria for the capstone at a greater level of sophistication, covering the topic in greater depth, or pursuing a public-facing component for the research.

Thesis Requirements

Students must identify both a primary faculty advisor and two additional readers by Week 2 of the semester of ArtH 3971V enrollment. Additional readers must be approved by the primary advisor and may include: other UMN professors or instructors (in art history or beyond); professors at other institutions; curators; artists; librarians; or research professionals in other fields. For students who wish to graduate summa cum laude, there are a few more requirements. Before or during finals week, but after submission of the capstone, students must also undergo a separate defense of the thesis, beyond the public presentation of the capstone required by ArtH 3971W. The defense is a meeting between the student, their advisor, and the two outside readers, and is meant to supply the student with collaborative, constructive feedback on their work. Finally, although it's not required, we encourage students to seek a wider audience for their research, by such means as: applying to participate in a research symposium, submitting the essay for publication, doing a poster presentation, etc.
