Major Requirements for Students Pursuing Latin Honors

Common Honors Courses in Major

CSCL/SCMC 1201V - Honors Cinema

Required Thesis Course

HCOL 3101H or HCOL 3102H

Capstone Considerations

Students must complete the 5xxx-level capstone courses required for all students in the major. Capstone projects emerge out of specific 5xxx-level courses (such as CSCL 5331: Discourse of the Novel), while Honors theses are more open-ended. They're devised by the student in consultation with their faculty director and formulated over a year of individual meetings, self-directed readings, and then culminate in a longer critical essay that (in this major) is often accompanied by a creative project (such as a screenplay, film, short story, or public presentation).

Thesis Requirements

The summa thesis must involve original research. Summa theses generally run 35-50 pages. The thesis must be of exceptionally high quality and involve original research. The thesis should define the research problem, include a literature review to demonstrate background knowledge of the topic, and explore and analyze the problem as creatively as possible. The thesis should reflect work with both primary and secondary source materials. When you have completed your summa thesis, you will do an oral presentation OR multimedia presentation of your research.

Plan C Thesis Options

For CSCL majors, Plan C is not typical and the student's particular project would have to justify the exception. The project would still need to be largely academic, but could integrate other formats such as a website or podcast. Plan C theses would require an accompanying essay, where the student would have a chance to contextualize their project within the scope of their studies, reflect upon their intentions, and discuss their successes and failures.
