Music Therapy (BMus)

Major Requirements for Students Pursuing Latin Honors

Common Honors Courses in Major

Many honors students choose to fulfill honors course requirements through their liberal education requirements or taking graduate level courses

Required Thesis Course

Music Therapy students must take either MuEd 8810 (Music Therapy Research) -OR- MuEd 5808 (Medical Music Therapy, a graduate level class that focuses on preparing students for a research project)

Capstone Considerations

The Honors thesis does not count as the capstone for any BMus Degree. The Capstone for the Music Therapy BMus is the music therapy internship. After completing all required academic coursework, music therapy majors spend 1,040 hours (approximately six months) in the community practicing music therapy while supervised by Board Certified Music Therapists. The internship can be taken for 1-13 credits. Students who double major and choose to complete the capstone requirement in their other major are still required to take the Music Therapy BMus capstone, MUED 5855: Music Therapy Internship (1.0-13.0 cr).

Thesis Requirements

Students writing summa cum laude thesis must produce a scholarly paper comprising some form of original thought, and must pass an oral exam with the three members of the thesis committee.

Plan C Thesis Options

Students may complete another written document—an original musical score, augmented program notes for the student’s recital, a suite of pedagogical materials, and so — apart from a traditional research paper so long as there is some framing/contextualizing language that situates this project within the body of relevant existing work. Plan C projects are not eligible for summa cum laude.
