Major Requirements for Students Pursuing Latin Honors

Students must complete the 5xxx-level capstone courses required for all students in the major. Capstone projects emerge out of specific 5xxx-level courses (such as CSCL 5411: Avant-Garde Cinema), while Honors theses are more open-ended. They're devised by the student in consultation with their faculty director and formulated over a year of individual meetings, self-directed readings, and then culminate in a longer critical essay that (in this major) is often accompanied by a creative project (such as a screenplay, film, short story, or public presentation).
The summa thesis must involve original research. Summa theses generally run 35-50 pages. The thesis must be of exceptionally high quality and involve original research. The thesis should define the research problem, include a literature review to demonstrate background knowledge of the topic, and explore and analyze the problem as creatively as possible. The thesis should reflect work with both primary and secondary source materials. When you have completed your summa thesis, you will do an oral presentation OR multimedia presentation of your research.
