Students who declared their major Fall 2019 or later will need to complete JOUR 4999, a one-credit course. Students do not need to complete this course if they are completing the capstone in a different major.
A HSJMC faculty supervisor (typically the faculty member teaching the Thesis Seminar course) must be the thesis advisor and one other HSJMC faculty (which may include adjuncts) must also sit on the three-person thesis committee. Summa theses generally run 40 to 70 pages and must be of exceptionally high quality and involve original research. Summa theses should define the research problem, include a literature review to demonstrate background knowledge of the topic and explore and analyze the problem as creatively as possible. The summa level thesis should reflect work with both primary and secondary source materials. Students must do an oral presentation of the research once it is complete.
For cum laude and magna cum laude theses, a HSJMC faculty supervisor must be the thesis advisor (typically the faculty member teaching the Honors Thesis Seminar course; a three-person thesis committee is still required). Magna and cum laude theses generally run 30 to 60 pages. The paper should define the research problem, include a literature review to demonstrate background knowledge of the topic and explore and analyze the problem as creatively as possible.
