Honors student Jasmine Shackleford won the 2025 U-Spatial Mapping Prize for Best Storytelling. Shackleford created Owámniyomni Okhódayapi: Revitalizing St. Anthony Falls, which shows "how a grassroots Dakota-led nonprofit is collaborating with governments, nonprofits and businesses alike to restore land around the falls." Shackleford is majoring in journalism and environmental planning.
Celebrating great design, cartography, and storytelling through maps, the U-Spatial Mapping Prize awards substantial prizes in different categories. Winning maps tell a story and stand on their own with minimal narrative to give context. Submissions are evaluated by a panel of judges with extensive background in cartography, design, and other related fields. A generous gift from University of Minnesota alumnus Jack Dangermond, founder and president of Esri, helps support the prizes.
