Celebrations
Juniors Hannah Bodmer and Brian Carrick were awarded Goldwater Scholarships for 2021-22. Hannah is a Biology major minoring in Entomology. She has been conducting research on the development of pesticide resistance in corn rootworms with Professor Kenneth Ostlie and on the effects of warming temperatures on aquatic fly longevity and behavior with Professor Leonard Ferrington. Last summer she was awarded a research internship by the German Academic Exchange (DAAD) to study riparian spiders at the University of Konstanz, a project that she hopes to finally complete this summer. Brian is majoring in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. His research on the dispersal of polymers in ionic liquids with Professor Timothy Lodge was recently recognized with a top award for undergraduate research from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Graduate students Trae Larson (AMES) and Samuel Erickson (BMBB), and undergraduates Casey Lagueras (AMES, Global Studies) and Kate Hein (AMES, Global Studies) were awarded Critical Language Scholarships by the State Department to study foreign languages abroad this summer. Ross Abram, Hibo Ahmed, Natalie Armstrong, Courtney Brost, Jesus Encarnacion, Shameela Khan, Eric Liffrig, Haley Olson and Hunter Slingbaum were named as alternates for the program.
Juniors Lili Braatz and Yeng Vang were awarded Public Policy and International Affairs summer fellowships to develop their skills for careers in public service through attending PPIA Summer Institutes.
Seniors Henry Twiss (Math) and Aron Balakrishna (MechE) and recent graduates Tsvetelina Baryekova (’18, BiomedE), Emma Boehm (’19, EEB), Sarah Brown (’19, Econ), Steven Bulfer (’20, ElectE), Megan Clarke (’17, Design), Blake Johnson (’19, Chem/ChemE), Ishita Kamboj (’19, Mat Sci), Leslie Kent (’20, MicroBio), David Kitto (’19, ChemE), Samuel Liu (’20, ElectE), Jackson Mejia (’20, Econ), Anna Parenteau (’17, Psych), Cara Piazza (’19, MechE), Michelle Qian (’19, Chem), Olivia Songster (’18, Cell Bio), Cory West (Mat Sci), Devon Tums (’20, CompE), Jack Van Sambeek (’20, Mat Sci) and Claire Zurn (’19, BiomedE) have been awarded Graduate Research Fellowships by the National Science Foundation to support their continuing studies in math, science and engineering.
Its Fulbright Time!
The Fulbright US Student Program has opened its application for the 2022-23 academic year. Rising seniors, recent graduates and graduate students are invited to apply for awards that support independent research, graduate study and English language instruction in countries around the world. Recent University of Minnesota students have received Fulbright Awards to study for graduate degrees in coastal ecosystems in Galway, Ireland, international education in London, psychology in the Netherlands, and plant science in East Anglia, England. Others have completed research projects on dendrochronology in Chile, urban theater in Brazil, biomedical engineering in Germany, architecture in South Korea, and animal behavior in Morocco. Still more have taught English in Brazil, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and elsewhere.
Students require an interview with a campus committee and an institutional assessment to complete their applications. Undergraduates and alumni interested in applying in the current cycle should contact ONIS at natschol@umn.edu to make arrangements. Graduate students should contact the Graduate College Fellowships Office at gradfellow@umn.edu. Both offices will be holding information sessions and workshops over the next months to help students prepare competitive applications. The campus deadline for submitting applications is August 25. Campus interviews will be conducted in September and final applications must be submitted by October 12.
