Celebrations:

Junior Gretchen North was selected as an inaugural Obama Voyager Scholar.  A CFANS student majoring in Environmental Sciences Policy and Management and Fish, Wildlife & Conservation Biology, she is one of 100 students nationally who will receive up to $50,000 for their junior and senior years plus $10,000 for a summer work/travel experience in between. Voyager Scholars are committed to careers of public service and have records of community service and leadership. Gretchen has worked with Minneapolis Climate Action and has done data analysis of the abundance of floral species at Cedar Creek and on the foraging behavior of Thompson’s gazelles based on data collected in the Serengeti.  She plan to spend next summer working on environmental initiatives in Panama.

Twenty-four seniors and recent graduates applied this fall to the Fulbright US Student program to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad next year. Students and alums applied to study neuroscience in London, research economic development in Thailand, and to teach English in Brazil among other things. We hope that many of them join the 146 Golden Gophers who have gone abroad as Fulbrighters over the last 30 years. The next cycle of Fulbright applications will open April 1, 2023.  Juniors and seniors interested in applying should arrange to talk with ONIS in the new year.

Thirty-four undergraduates and graduate students applied for Critical Language Scholarships to study Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian and Swahili next summer.  If selected, they will spend ten weeks abroad next summer engaged in immersive language study funded by the US Department of State.  75 University of Minnesota, Twin Cities students have been selected as Critical Language Scholars since 2009.
