The ONIS newsletter is a semi-monthly record of news concerning applications for nationally and internationally competitive scholarships, primarily for undergraduates and primarily for the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. Celebrations:

Annika Herdtle, who graduated last May with a B.S. in Ecology, Evolution and Behavior has been named one of 16 Churchill Scholars for 2022. She will spend next year completing an MPhil in Zoology at the University of Cambridge with all expenses covered by the Churchill Foundation.  Annika is the sixth University of Minnesota student in eight years to receive this award, one of the most selective and prestigious for students in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering.  During her undergraduate career she completed research projects with Professors Emily Snell-Rood, Michael Wilson, and Craig Packer, and she spent two summers in the mountains of Northern California tracking birds with the Institute for Bird Populations.  Annika is spending this year as a teaching assistant at a high school in Austria.

Thirty one students and recent alumni have been chosen as semifinalists for the Fulbright US Student Program. Seniors Lili Braatz, Elyse Eckert, Gurtaran Johal, Shameela Khan, Julia Machuchu, and Katie Nichols; alumni Fisher Chu, Carissa Fitzlaff, Annika Herdtle, Nadia Huffman, Nicholas Jacobs, Jaclyn Lewine, Juliet Paulson, Christina Peterson, Margaret Sleeth, Sean Van Domelan, Joseph Waldvogel, and Rose Xiong; graduate students Carlie Cervantes de Blois, John Dieck, Luke Freeman, Alexandra Griffin, Quratulain Gulamhussein, Abby Guthmann, Benjamin Jorgenson, Samuel Nelson, Elizabeth Orr,  Julian Robles, Emily Sumner, Vanessa Voller, and Calvin Waller have all been approved by US review committees and will await final decisions from abroad.

Nine students have been named as semifinalists for Critical Language Scholarships. Helen Benton, Caroline Colbert, Claire DuPont, Thomas Fabian, James Hamrick, Eva Kough, Josephine Lacy, Tessa Register, and Samuel Turner will move on to the final selection round and, if chosen, spend ten weeks of immersive language study in foreign countries this summer.

University nominates four students for Goldwater Scholarships in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering.  The campus nominating committee for the Goldwater Scholarship has elected to put forward Briana Beatty (Biology), Madelyn Blake (GCB, Neuroscience), Sarah Tanck (Chemistry, Chemical Engr.) and Fabian Williams (Chemical Engr.) as candidates for the national award.  450 students from all US colleges and universities will be recognized for the academic achievements and dedication to careers in scientific research.

Approaching Scholarship Deadlines:  Scholarships with a campus deadline listed are ONIS priority scholarships with require a university nomination process.  Students must consult with ONIS and submit a preliminary application for these awards.  Scholarships with only a national deadline listed are ONIS supported scholarships.  Students may apply directly for these awards, but ONIS is willing to support them with writing support and strategic advice.

Astronaut Scholarship (Sophomores and juniors):  $15K toward undergraduate educational expenses, a trip to ASF Innovators Expo, and professional mentoring for students in Science, Engineering or Mathematics.  February 14, 2022 (campus)

Katherine Sullivan Scholarship (Seniors*): Up to $15K toward the expenses of one year of immersive study abroad.  *Recipients must maintain undergraduate status during the tenure of the scholarship. Students who will have completed four years of undergraduate education will need to consult with an academic advisor about the feasibility and consequences of delaying graduation. March 15, 2022 (campus)

NIH Undergraduate Scholarship (Students): Up to $20K/year and paid research training at NIH labs for students with exceptional financial need and interests in biomedical, behavioral, or health-related social science research. Deadline: March 17 (national)

Truman Scholarship (Sophomores): $30K for graduate education in a relevant field for students committed to careers in public service. Successful applicants will have demonstrated leadership skills and a substantial record of public service.  Deadline:  April 1 (campus)

Churchill Scholarship (Juniors, Seniors):  All expenses for a one-year Masters degree in a STEM field at Cambridge University in 2023-24.  The University may nominate two students with outstanding academic records and innovative research experience.  Deadline:  April 1 (campus)

Rhodes Scholarship (Juniors, Seniors):  All expenses for two years of graduate studies in any discipline at the University of Oxford starting in fall 2023.  Successful applicants will have outstanding academic records, demonstrated leadership skills, energy and commitment to serve the world’s needs, and a clearly articulated plan for study at Oxford.  Deadline:  April 1 (campus)

Marshall Scholarship (Juniors, Seniors):  All expenses for two years of graduate studies in any discipline at one or more British universities starting in fall 2023. Successful applicants will have outstanding academic records, notable scholarly accomplishments, leadership experience, and a distinct rationale for studying in Britain.  Deadline:  April 1 (campus)
