ONIS Newsletter Vol. 4, no. 3 (February 2023)

The ONIS newsletter is a semi-monthly record of news concerning applications for nationally and internationally competitive scholarships, primarily for undergraduates and primarily for the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. Celebrations:

Four students have been named as semifinalists for Critical Language Scholarships. Emily Posson (Korean), William Sax (Arabic), Sarah Sukardi (Indonesian), and Lauren Vander Esch (Turkish) will move on to the final selection round and, if chosen, participate in ten weeks of immersive language study in foreign countries this summer.

Description automatically generatedNineteen University students and recent alumni have been chosen as semifinalists for the Fulbright US Student Program. Seniors Zaynab Ahmed (Barbados), Chiron Crayton (France), Matthew Doty (Bulgaria), Charles Gannon (Netherlands), Julia Goettl (Colombia), Mya Halvorson (Sweden), Ibrahim Irfanullah (Brazil), Patrick Nolan (Nepal), Abigail Palmer (Kenya) and Nisha Panigrahy (UK); alumni Charlotte Goodhope (Austria), Kyle Krueger (Germany) and Ben Meranda (Germany); graduate students Alexandra Griffin (Argentina), Abby Guthmann (Kenya), Clare Harmon (Italy), Denae Harmon (Georgia), Adrine Kocharian (Armenia) and Tanner Rogers (South Korea) have been approved by US review committees and await decisions from abroad.

The University has nominated four students for Goldwater Scholarships in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering.  The campus nominating committee for the Goldwater Scholarship has elected to put forward Ethan Ashbrook (Chemistry), Laima Liulevicius (Plant and Microbial Biology), Fred Tutt (Chemistry and Materials Science) and Jamison Ward (Earth Sciences) as candidates for the national award.  450 students from all US colleges and universities will be recognized for the academic achievements and dedication to careers in scientific research.

Opportunities:

2022-23 Deadlines for campus nominations:  The following awards are ONIS priority scholarships and require a campus nomination, ranking, or assessment.  Students who plan to apply will need to meet the campus deadline. 

Truman ScholarshipSophomores. Awards up to $30,000 for graduate study to students with a record of leadership and initiative who are committed to careers of public service. April 1, 2023

Rhodes ScholarshipJuniors, Seniors, Grads. Awards two years of study at the University of Oxford for students with outstanding records of leadership and achievement in any field and the commitment to serve humanity with their skills and knowledge.  April 1, 2023

Marshall Scholarship: Juniors, Seniors, Grads. Awards two years of graduate study at any university in the United Kingdom to students with outstanding academic records, demonstrated leadership, and the ability to build productive relationships.  April 1, 2023

Churchill Scholarship: Juniors, Seniors. Awards one year of graduate study for a Master’s degree in a STEM field at the University of Cambridge to students with outstanding academic accomplishments.  April 1, 2023

Mitchell Scholarship: Juniors, Seniors, Grads. Awards one year of graduate study for a Master’s degree in any field at a university in Ireland for students of exceptional academic ability and demonstrated interest in Ireland.  April 1, 2023.

ONIS supported scholarship deadlines:  Students may apply directly for these awards, but ONIS is willing to support them with advice on strategy and written materials.

Tillman Scholarship: Undergraduates or graduate students.  An average of $10,000 to veterans, active members of the military, or their spouses who demonstrate dedication to service, intellectual curiosity, selfless leadership, and positively impacting the world.  February 28 (national)

Voyager Scholarship: Sophomores with documented financial need who plan to engage in careers of public service. The Obama Foundation’s Voyager Scholarship awards up to $50,000 to 100 students nationally to support their final two years of undergraduate study. Scholars also receive a $10,000 stipend to support a travel/service project during the summer in between their junior and senior years.  March 22 (national)
