Tutoring for an Honors Experience
UHP students can earn an Honors Experience for both paid and unpaid tutoring or teaching assistant positions. These opportunities serve to provide learning and enhancement of academic curricula for undergraduates or school-age children. A minimum of 45 hours per semester is required to earn an Honors Experience. (This applies only to students who began UHP prior to Fall 2018. Students beginning Fall 2018 or later should consult the Current Honors Requirements.)
Justice Page Middle School TutoringThe University Honors Program is proud to partner with Minneapolis Public Schools to bring UHP students to Justice Page Middle School for tutoring opportunities. Page is a unique middle school located in South Minneapolis with a curriculum focused on engaging students in STEM fields. They offer many classes specifically on STEM topics and want talented UHP students to assist in their classrooms. You don't have to be studying a STEM discipline to join the program.
This is a fantastic opportunity to serve the community surrounding the University, as Minneapolis has one of the largest achievement gaps in the country. Minneapolis Public Schools hope to continue the program's success with the positive impact that UHP students have made at Page in the past.
Tutors are typically asked to donate about 5 hours per week of their time to travel to Page and work in classrooms with middle school students. Applications for the fall 2018 semester are now OPEN, due Monday, September 3rd, 2018. Past tutors must re-apply each year.
For those doing the Center for Community Engaged Learners (CCEL) program, tutors will also attend approximately 15 hours of workshops, one-on-one meetings, and reflection. This will consist of a one hour long information meeting (either on Friday 9/28 from 2:30–3:30pm or on Tuesday 11/6 from 3–4pm), a one-to-one meeting with an adviser, and some time spent on reflection. If you cannot make any of the above sessions, please contact Jarred Paquin.
