Meets: Mondays 3:00pm-4:30pm
Over the past 50 years, video games have transitioned from niche technical demonstrations to a leading form of entertainment for billions around the world – with industry revenues far surpassing other forms of entertainment like books, movies, or music. But while there are many opportunities in college to study literature or film or music, there are relatively few to think deeply about video games. This NEXUS aims to fix that – introducing students to a wide range of lectures exploring the video game industry, hobby, and games themselves from interesting and unique perspectives.
Possible Topics we might explore include:
- Game design and development
- Game media and streaming
- Esports
- Narrative design and games as storytelling
- Roleplaying and Identity
- Digital commerce and games
- History of video games
We will pair our learning with sampling a small selection of games as a group and reflecting on our play, as we grow in our understanding of video games as a medium. No specific gaming platform or experience is required to participate in this experience.
EXPERIENCE GOALS:
- Learn about academic and practitioner perspectives on video games
- Explore variety of interdisciplinary thought through the lens of video games
- Bond as a cohort through common gaming experiences and group reflections
- Explore a topic of personal interest in games through a final project, presented to the other students
