Capstone Considerations

The Music B.A. Capstone is a directed-study done under the supervision of a SOM faculty member (usually the B.A. faculty advisor). Depending on the student's chosen elective emphasis and career goals, the capstone may take various forms, including a recital, lecture recital, research paper, composition, or another appropriate medium. Project topics can include performance, musicology, music theory, composition, creative studies and media, or pedagogy, among others. They must take MUS 3995 - Major Project (1.0 cr). The Honors thesis counts as the capstone for a Music B.A.

Thesis Requirements

Students writing summa cum laude thesis must produce a scholarly paper comprising some form of original thought, and must pass an oral exam with the three members of the thesis committee.

Plan C Thesis Options

Students may complete another written document—an original musical score, augmented program notes for the student’s recital, a suite of pedagogical materials, and so — apart from a traditional research paper so long as there is some framing/contextualizing language that situates this project within the body of relevant existing work. Plan C projects are not eligible for summa cum laude.
