The ONIS newsletter is a semi-monthly record of news concerning applications for nationally and internationally competitive scholarships, primarily for undergraduates and primarily for the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota. Celebrations:

Two students at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities have been recognized as Goldwater Scholars by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.  Sophomore Madelyn Blake and junior Sarah Tanck will receive scholarships worth up to $7500 for the next academic year.  This nationally competitive scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research-oriented careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.  Blake is majoring in Neuroscience and Genetics, Cell Biology & Development and works with Professor Benjamin Saunders.  She plans complete an MD/PhD program and conduct research on the neuroscience of addiction.  Tanck is studying Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and conducting research with Professor Mark Distefano.  She plans to complete a PhD and develop technologies to combat viral infections.

Two undergraduates—Claire Dupont and Thomas Fabian—and three graduate students—Eva Kough, Tessa Register and Samuel Turner—have been offered Critical Language Scholarships this year.  Three others—Helen Benton, James Hamrick, and Josephine Lacy—were named as alternates. Dupont and Fabian are both AMES majors studying Korean and Chinese respectively.

Every year the University nominates sophomores or juniors to be considered for Stuart and Morris Udall Awards in Environmental and Native American affairs.  Nominees must display exceptional leadership skills, academic performance and dedication to either the conservation the natural environment or the tribal affairs of Native nations.  This year Lara Boudinot (FWCB), Alexandra Davis (APEC, FWCB), Rachel de Sobrino (Geography), and Trey Feuerhelm (Forest Resources) have all been nominated in the Environment category, and Joleece Pecore (Art, American Indian Studies) has been nominated in the Tribal Affairs category.  The Udall Foundation will announce the 2022 Scholars in May.

Its Fulbright Time! The Fulbright US Student Program has opened its application for the 2023-24 academic year. Rising seniors, recent graduates and graduate students are invited to apply for awards that support independent research, graduate study and English language instruction in countries around the world.  Recent University of Minnesota students have received Fulbright Awards to study for graduate degrees in coastal ecosystems in Galway, Ireland, cultural studies in Istanbul, psychology in the Netherlands, and plant science in East Anglia, England. Others have completed research projects on dendrochronology in Chile, urban theater in Brazil, biomedical engineering in Germany, architecture in South Korea, and animal behavior in Morocco. Still more have taught English in Brazil, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and elsewhere.

Students require an interview with a campus committee and an institutional assessment to complete their applications.  Undergraduates and alumni interested in applying in the current cycle should contact ONIS at natschol@umn.edu to make arrangements.  Graduate students should contact the Graduate College Fellowships Office at gradfellow@umn.edu.  Both offices will be holding information sessions and workshops over the next months to help students prepare competitive applications.  The campus deadline for submitting applications is August 24.  Campus interviews will be conducted in September and final applications must be submitted by October 11.

Approaching Scholarship Deadlines:  Scholarships with a campus deadline listed are ONIS priority scholarships with require a university nomination process.  Students must consult with ONIS and submit a preliminary application for these awards.  Scholarships with only a national deadline listed are ONIS supported scholarships.  Students may apply directly for these awards, but ONIS is willing to support them with writing support and strategic advice.

Rising seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students may also be interested in the following scholarships that support study abroad and in the US and that have deadlines early in the fall.  All are open the US citizens and foreign nationals:

Schwarzman Scholarship (Seniors and grads:  Full support for one year of study at Tsinghua University in Beijing):  late September

Knight-Hennessey Scholarship (Seniors and grads: Full support for a graduate program at Stanford University):  late September

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship (Seniors and grads: Full support for a graduate program at Cambridge University): early October
