Three students at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities have been recognized as Goldwater Scholars by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.  Juniors Ethan Ashbrook, Fred Tutt and Jamison Ward will receive scholarships worth up to $7500 for the next academic year.  This nationally competitive scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research-oriented careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering.  Ashbrook is majoring in Chemistry and works with Professor Ian Tonks on Titanium Catalysis as a sustainable alternative to the rare earth catalysts frequently employed in industry.  Tutt is a Chemical Engineering major who has spent the last two years synthesizing and characterizing delafossite in the lab of Professor Chris Leighton to understand its unique electronic properties, which have potential applications in microelectronic circuitry. Ward is interested in geomicrobiology and has studied the composition of Martian meteorites, the depth of volcanic magma chambers, and, currently, calcium incorporation in PolyP granules with Professor Jake Bailey.  The three join junior Madelyn Blake, whose award from last year was renewed by the Goldwater Foundation.

Fourteen UMTC seniors and recent graduates were awarded 2023 Graduate Research Fellowships by the National Science Foundation.  Sauviz Alaei (’21 Physics/Math), Autumn Askew (Psychology ’18), Briana Beatty (Plant and Microbial Biology ’23), Ashley Darst (EEB ’23), Clare Froelich (Chemistry/ChemE ’22), Travis Hammerstad (Chemistry/ChemE ’21), Channing Klein (Chemistry ’21), Lucy Kwiatkowski (Microbiology ’20), Kayla Lehtola (Physics/Math ’22), Tejas Nivarty (ChemE ’22), Jack Reddan (Microbiology ’20), Ben Rosenblad (Civil Engineering ’23), Cortney Stedman (Psychology ’20) and Fabian Williams (Chemical Engineering ’23) will receive awards worth $150,000 for three years of graduate study.

Sophomores Lauren Vander Esch and Penelope Corbett have been awarded summer grants to support study and research abroad.  Vander Esch will spend ten weeks in Ankara, Turkey studying Turkish on a Critical Language Scholarship.  The Biology, Society and Environment major will add Turkish to her knowledge of German and Arabic.  Corbett, a Psychology major, will join a research project on the brain’s ability to process music at Western University in London, Ontario. Her research internship will be supported by Fulbright Canada’s Mitacs-Globalink program.

It's Fulbright Time! The Fulbright US Student Program has opened its application for the 2024-25 academic year. Rising seniors, recent graduates and graduate students are invited to apply for awards that support independent research, graduate study and English language instruction in countries around the world.  Recent University of Minnesota students have received Fulbright Awards to study for graduate degrees in coastal ecosystems in Galway, Ireland, cultural studies in Istanbul, psychology in the Netherlands, and plant science in East Anglia, England. Others have completed research projects on dendrochronology in Chile, urban theater in Brazil, biomedical engineering in Germany, architecture in South Korea, and animal behavior in Morocco. Still more have taught English in Brazil, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Germany, India, Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and elsewhere.

Students require an interview with a campus committee and an institutional assessment to complete their applications.  Undergraduates and alumni interested in applying in the current cycle should contact ONIS at natschol@umn.edu to make arrangements.  Graduate students should contact the Graduate College Fellowships Office at gradfellow@umn.edu.  Both offices will be holding information sessions and workshops over the next months to help students prepare competitive applications.  The campus deadline for submitting applications is August 30.  Campus interviews will be conducted in September and final applications must be submitted by October 10.

Approaching Scholarship Deadlines:  Scholarships with a campus deadline listed are ONIS priority scholarships with require a university nomination process.  Students must consult with ONIS and submit a preliminary application for these awards.  Scholarships with only a national deadline listed are ONIS supported scholarships.  Students may apply directly for these awards, but ONIS is willing to support them with writing support and strategic advice.

Rising seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students may also be interested in the following scholarships that support study abroad and in the US and that have deadlines early in the fall.  All are open the US citizens and foreign nationals:

Schwarzman Scholarship (Seniors and grads:  Full support for one year of study at Tsinghua University in Beijing):  National deadline in late September

Knight-Hennessey Scholarship (Seniors and grads: Full support for a graduate program at Stanford University):  National deadline in late September

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship (Seniors and grads: Full support for a graduate program at Cambridge University): National deadline early October
