Celebrations:

Every year the University nominates four juniors to be considered for Harry S. Truman Scholarships, which award $30,000 toward the graduate education of approximately one student from each state.  Nominees must display exceptional leadership skills and dedication to public service as well as excellent academic performance.  This year Natalie Melms (Wisconsin), Abdulaziz Mohamed (Minnesota), Brandon Prichard (North Dakota) and Connor Ranck (Kansas) were nominated, and Mohamed and Prichard have been selected as finalists.  Both will interview at the end of March for the nationally selective awards.

Sophomores who wish to be considered for nomination next year must submit a preliminary application to ONIS by April 1 of this year. Contact natschol@umn.edu for details.

Adam Boeckerman, a sophomore Biomedical Engineering major, and Jessica Jahn, a junior in Ecology/Evolution Behavior and German, have been awarded summer research internships by the German Academic Exchange (DAAD).  Adam will spend ten weeks this summer at the Werner Seimens Imaging Center at the University Hospital in Tübingen working on applying positron emission tomography (PET) to study the roots of neurodegenerative diseases. Jessica will be working with researchers at the University of Göttingen who are assessing the populations of small mammals such as squirrels, voles and mice with respect to habitat and food supply at a number of sites across northern Germany.  Both a funded by the DAAD’s RISE program, which pays for STEM students at U.S. universities to participate in summer research projects with German research groups.  Applications for the summer of 2023 will open this fall and be due in mid-December.
