Michelle Abdon
Michelle Abdon, Chesky-Obama Voyager Scholar

Junior Michelle Abdon has been named to the second cohort of Chesky-Obama Voyager Scholars. These students, who are planning careers of public service, receive up to $25K a year for their junior and senior years of college plus a summer travel grant grew up in Crystal, Minnesota and is completing an individually designed major in CCAPS’ Inter-College Program that combines Holistic Health and Healing and Youth Studies. She plans to use the travel grant to learn more about how the health systems in the Philippines serve or underserve Filipino mental health. The first cohort of Voyager Scholars included Senior Gretchen North, who has been conducting environmental research in Kenya and Panama.  Applications for the next cohort of Voyager Scholars will be due in the spring, and interested sophomores should contact ONIS for support.

Twenty-three seniors and recent graduates applied this fall to the Fulbright US Student program to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad next year. Students and alums applied to study cartographic preservation in Manchester, geo-thermal energy in Reykjavik,  public health Taiwan, and to teach English in eight different countries among other things. We hope that many of them join the 148 Golden Gophers who have gone abroad as Fulbrighters over the last 30 years. The next cycle of Fulbright applications will open April 1, 2024.  Juniors and seniors interested in applying should arrange to talk with ONIS about their plans.
